Philadelphia was a large city. So much to see and much to do. He thought he would like it. Oliver and Oliver was a thriving business. He took his responsibilities seriously and was respected among his colleagues for his abilities. He was eager to learn all he could about business and the management. Uncle Joseph was depending on him.
He didn't receive letters from Jane as often as he used to. Then again, being as busy as he was, he didn't write like he used to either. Surely she understood that. She should. He was working for their future.
I'll write her tomorrow
, he thought.
I'm just too tired tonight. When was the last time I wrote? For certain I will write tomorrow
.
He socialized with new friends, had a nice apartment,
loved the theater and went horseback ridging as often as time allowed. In the almost two years he had been with the company he had been promoted twice. Unheard of before him!
And now they had asked him to stay on! Quite an honor.
But that was not in the plan. Next week was his last week. Travel arrangements for his trip home had been made.
His friend Joshua had asked a question that had bothered him. "Jeremiah it has been seven years since you have seen
Jane. How do you really know she wants to marry you? How do you know you will still have the same feelings? How do you know she has not changed after all this time?"
He had never even considered that...until then. Is that
why she didn't write as often? He felt a sickening nausea creep over him. He wrote her to meet him by their tree on May 6th
at noon, if she still felt the same. He said if she weren't there
he would understand. It had been a long time. He would still always love her.
But he would not understand!
They had promised each other
, he thought as he ended the letter.
The Dolly Moorland entered Edenton Bay. The skiff took him to the dock. He felt week, but walked quickly towards the courthouse.
"Please, please be there," he thought.
He saw the tree.
Jane was not there.
